Public transport with public bus from Medan or from the Airport starts from Amplas bus station. Public buses serving the Parapat Bus station are Sentosa, ALS and Sejatera. Intra stopped serving Parapat in 2013.
For Parapat and Samosir Sejatera is the best as it operates quite frequently and after the Parapat bus station also serves Aji Bata Harbour (for the ferries to Tomok) and Tiga Raja Harbour for the passenger ferries to Tuk Tuk.
From the centre of Medan to Amplas one can take an Angkot. Just make sure that your angkot will report to Amplas. Cost is Rp 5.000,-- per person. The ride may bring you through places in Medan where you could not even dream of and the ride may take up to 2 to 4 hrs. A faster way is to go by taxi from the centre of Medan to Amplas, any taxi will do and the cost will be between Rp 30.000,-- and Rp 50.000,-- and the ride will take 0.5 to 1.0 hr.
The most reliable and safe taxi in Medan is Bluebird. From the centre of Medan the ride will take about 0.5 to 1.0 hr and the cost is Rp 50.000,--
After arriving at the airport walk outside and follow the signs to the taxis and buses. From the taxi stand outside turn right for the DAMRI bus which will drop you at AMPLAS. Cost was Rp 10.000,-- per seat. Cost went up to Rp 15.000,-- but reportedy the cost is now back again at Rp 10.000,-- Though the DAMRI is said to operate with 15 min intervals, it only takes off when it is about full, so one may have to wait a bit.
When arriving at AMPLAS the Sejatera Bus will already be waiting for you, ready to. However, it goes only when the bus is full. This may take an hour if not more. Even if you think the bus is full, you will find out on the first stretch to Tebing Tinggi that the bus was not really full as much more passengers board the bus than jump off the bus. You will for sure have a racing star crazy F1 driver. Doors and windows will be open and it will be a full smoking bus. Be very careful with your belongings, especially when taking your seats in the back of the bus. Somebody may just be in a hurry to jump of the bus and accidentally take one of your smaller bags with him.
If the bus is not full enough in Siantar the driver may decide to wait till the bus is filled up again. This may take another hour, if not more. In Parapat the bus will first report to the Parapat Bus station, dropping off passengers and picking up passengers for the ride back to Medan. Following that the bus will stop at Ajibata Harbour dropping off passengers and picking up passengers from Tomok for the ride back to Medan. The driver may decide to wait for one or two more ferries coming in from Tomok to fill up the bus. The next stop will be your stop at Tiga Raja Harbour for the Passenger Ferry to Tuk Tuk.
Note: Depending on the mood of the driver and his assistants ticket cost vary from Rp 25.000,-- to Rp 35.000,-- per person.
Total travel time from the Airport to Parapat via Amplas and with Sejatera Bus some 8 hrs.
The mini buses for Parapat – Tarutung start from Amplas Bus station. At Amplas you can make your pick from mini buses which are ready to depart for Parapat, Tarutung etc, with a stop in Parapat at the Parapat bus station, such as TTi, MRT, KBT, KUPJ. The minibus will normally seat 10 passengers, but is only full with 14 passengers or more. You will for sure have a crazy racing star F1 driver. Doors and windows will be open and it will be a full smoking bus. Don’t be surprised that halfway the bus makes a detour to drop off some passengers in a small Kampung. Such detour may take a couple of hours. In Parapat take an Angkot to the Tiga Raja Harbour for the Passenger Ferry to Tuk Tuk. Cost for the minibus from Amplas to the Parapat bus station is Rp 40.000,--. Cost for the angkot from the Parapat bus station to Tiga Raja Harbour is Rp 3.000,--
Total travel time from the airport via Amplas with mini bus to Tiga Raja Harbour in Parapat will be some 8 hrs.
