After more than two years of limited operation the Airport is being serviced again by the first International Flights from Kuala Lumpur since the end of April 2022. One may expect that this is the start of what we like to see as back to normal.
Unfortunately, it will take some time before road transportation to and from the Airport will be back to normal. Though, due to heavy competition between transportation provider survivors, transportation costs can be extremely cheap but also very tricky, if not dangerous, for reason of unreliable cars and drivers.
We recommend to arrange for your transportation, before your arrival, with a reliable transporter/driver, even if this costs a bit more.
ARRIVAL AT KNIA AIRPORT – MEDAN. Updated: November 19, 2019.
INTERNATIONAL ARRIVAL AT KNIA
The new International Airport serving Medan – Kuala Namu International Airport (KNIA) started operating in July 2013. After some initial hick-ups the airport is now operating smoothly. From the plane passengers are still transported by buses to the customs area before the arrival hall. Reportedly, the bathrooms in this area are really up to standard and clean. From the plane to the arrival hall, passing customs and picking up the luggage takes these days normally some 30 minutes which is something very hard to beat for any other International Airport, wherever in the World.
IN THE KNIA AIRPORT
One can easily see that the airport is still very new and one may expect quite some further developments inside the arrival hall in terms of shops, restaurants, taxi and hotel counters and such. Arriving passengers entering the arrival hall have a clear view of a series of ATMs and are met by drivers with signboards to pick up guests which have pre-arranged their transport. This is also the point where our driver meets the HORAS FAMILY HOME Guests. Other people are possibly just waiting for their personal guests, friends or maybe relatives. Free lance drivers are not allowed here, you will find those outside the airport.
OUTSIDE THE KNIA AIRPORT
On the way out of the airport to the car park, you can make your pick from the free lance drivers offering transportation services to especially Parapat, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang.
Before crossing what looks like the main road you can turn right to the buses or left to the taxis. Turn left for arranging a taxi to Medan. Taxi’s are waiting in line. The cost for one taxi to Medan is Rp 150.000,-- You find here also a small desk where you can arrange transportation for other destinations. Nice Trans is still the most reliable. Free lance taxis may be cheaper but you may be in for surprises. If you choose free lance make sure that you are transported in the car which is shown for you and that your driver is the fellow you are dealing with. Nice Trans operates shared taxi services to Parapat, cost is something like Rp 80.000,-- per seat but you may have to wait for minimum 6 fellow passengers.
On the other side are the buses.
DAMRI operates now to Amplas and Carrefour. Cost of the ticket to Amplas is Rp 15.000,-- . Cost of the ticket to Carrefour is Rp 30.000,--
ALS operates to Binjai. Cost of a ticket is Rp 35.000,--

Coming into the arrival hall from an International Flight one walks straight into a battery of ATM’s. Coming into the arrival hall from a Domestic Flight one passes the A&W Restaurant. This is the perfect place to sit and wait for passengers coming in with a domestic flight. A&W comes with its own attached smoking room. Another place where one can comfortably wait for incoming passengers which can also serve as meeting point is Kopi Toea.
