The new International Airport serving Medan – Kuala Namu International Airport (KNIA) started operating in July 2013. After some initial hick-ups the airport is now operating smoothly. Generally speaking as compared to the old airport, POLONIA which was located more or less in the centre of Medan the New Airport KNIA is clean, spacious and its services much more efficient. From the plane passengers are still transported by buses to the customs area before the arrival hall. Reportedly, the bathrooms in this area are really up to standard and clean. This is also the area where you can buy your Visa On Arrival, it is better to do this before joining the line for the customs. Cost of the Visa On Arrival (VOA) is $ 35,-- per person, as per July 5, 2014 in Cash. Sometimes other currencies are accepted but you may find the exchange rate not really impressive. From the plane to the arrival hall, passing customs and picking up the luggage takes these days normally some 30 minutes which is something very hard to beat for any other International Airport, wherever in the World.
Airport Tax at departure from KNIA for International Destinations is Rp 200.000,-- per passenger.
IN THE KNIA AIRPORT (October 2013)
I found the arrival hall clean and very spacious. One can easily see that the airport is still very new and one may expect quite some further developments inside the arrival hall in terms of shops, restaurants, taxi and hotel counters and such. Arriving passengers entering the arrival hall have a clear view of a series of ATMs and are met by drivers with signboards to pick up guests which have pre-arranged their transport. This is also the point where our driver meets the HORAS FAMILY HOME Guests. Other people are possibly just waiting for their personal guests, friends or maybe relatives. It seemed to me that free lance drivers are not allowed here, as I met quite some of those outside the airport.
Inside the arrival hall, just opposite the ALPHA MART, a small super market, is the Information and Taxi Desk. Unfortunately, taxi company names are not shown, so guests may not feel comfortable approaching this desk. This stand is primarily operated by Nice Trans, but one can also ask for taxi / transportation from Kokapur, Blue Bird and Paradep taxi. Fixed cost for a taxi to Medan is Rp 150.000,-- per taxi. Taxi’s from these companies are standby and available on call. As a meeting place in the arrival hall one could suggest ‘Coffee Tanba’ which looked nice.
On our way out of the airport to the car park, we could have made our pick from among the free lance drivers offering transportation services to especially Parapat, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang.
Just before the car park was another ‘Stand’ with signs for Taxi and Bus. This is the place where one can arrange again for a taxi to Medan. Taxi’s are waiting in line. Also here the cost for one taxi to Medan is Rp 150.000,-- For other destinations the Stand is calling for Nice Trans. Cost of a shared Nice Trans taxi seat to Parapat is Rp 75.000,-- but one has to wait for minimum 6 fellow passengers.
On the other side are the buses.
DAMRI operates now to Amplas and Carrefour. Cost of the ticket to Amplas is Rp 15.000,-- . Cost of the ticket to Carrefour is Rp 30.000,--
ALS operates to Binjai. Cost of a ticket is Rp 35.000,--
Coming into the arrival hall from an International Flight one walks straight into a battery of ATM’s. Coming into the arrival hall from a Domestic Flight one passes the A&W Restaurant. This is the perfect place to sit and wait for passengers coming in with a domestic flight. A&W comes with its own attached smoking room. Another place where one can comfortably wait for incoming passengers which can also serve as meeting point is Kopi Toea.

From this stand walking to the left to the taxis you find another Taxi Resmi Stand offering the same services. All around the Taxi Resmi Stands independent drivers and transporters offer their services to anybody interested in it.
Centre Taxi Resmi Stand Left Taxi Resmi Stand Snackbar on your way to the bus
There were about 25 Taxi Resmi waiting for passengers and ready to go.
Walking from the Centre Taxi Resmi Stand to the left you pass a small snackbar for refreshment on your way to the buses. The buses bring you to Amplas, Sunplaza, Medan Fair and Binjai.

When leaving the airport by car for Medan or Parapat one gets a view on the KNIA Welcome and the train station.
